The Beat (known in North America as The English Beat and Australia as The British Beat) are a 2 Tone ska revival band founded in England in 1978. Their songs fuse ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock, and their lyrics deal with themes of love, unity and sociopolitical topics.
The Beat, consisting of Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals), Andy Cox (guitar), David Steele (bass), Everett Morton (drums), and Saxa (saxophone), released three studio albums in the early 1980s: I Just Can’t Stop It (1980), Wha’ppen? (1981) and Special Beat Service (1982), and a string of singles, including “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “Too Nice To Talk To”, “Can’t Get Used To Losing You”, “Hands off She’s Mine” and “All Out To Get You”.
“Mirror in the Bathroom” is a single by British ska band The Beat released as a single in 1980 from their debut album I Just Can’t Stop It (also released in 1980). It reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart and consequently was their highest charting release in the UK until 1983. It was released again in 1995 as a CD single (Remix EP) to promote B.P.M.: The Very Best of the Beat (1996). The reissued single reached number 44 in 1995.
It was the first single released in the UK to have been fully digitally recorded.
The original version also features on the albums What is Beat? (1983), What is the English Beat? (1983), B.P.M.: The Very Best of the Beat (1996), Beat This! The Best of the Beat (2000), various artists release Rude Boy Revival (2002), The Platinum Collection (2006) and You Just Can’t Beat It: The Best of the Beat (2008). It was also included on two eclectic DJ-mixed albums: Tricky’s instalment of the Back to Mine series and the first of Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel albums. The song is still played live by the band regularly.
The song was ranked at #3 among the top ten “Tracks of the Year” for 1980 by NME.
The single was re-released on 21 April 2012 for Record Store Day 2012 as a limited edition 750 run of 7″ copies. Its B-side is “Too Nice to Talk To”.
Ranking Roger’s album ‘Pop Off The Head Top’ includes a new remix version of ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’ produced by Gaudi.
The song has also been recorded for the 1987 film Someone to Watch Over Me and the 1999 film SLC Punk!, by a project called Fifi.
