Yngwie Johan Malmsteen (born Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck; 30 June 1963) is a Swedish guitarist, songwriter, composer, and bandleader. Malmsteen first became known in the 1980s for his neoclassical metal playing style in heavy metal, and has released 20 studio albums in a career spanning over 40 years. In 2009, Time magazine rated Malmsteen as number 9 among the 11 greatest electric guitar players of all time.
Rising Force is the first studio album by guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen, released on March 5, 1984 through Polydor Records. It reached #60 on the Billboard 200 chart in 1985, remaining charted for 60 weeks and later receiving a nomination for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at the 1986 Grammy Awards. In a 2009 article by Guitar World magazine, the album was ranked first in the all-time top ten list of shred albums. “Black Star” and “Far Beyond the Sun” have endured as two of Malmsteen’s most popular songs, as well as being staples of his live setlist. In a 2008 Guitar World interview, Malmsteen said of them: “I’ll probably play ‘Far Beyond the Sun’ and ‘Black Star’ until the day I die”.
